A Comprehensive Guide to Staircase Remodeling and Design

stairwell design

The tops of individual stairs (the part you step on) are called treads. Vibrant colors are hardly the only way to decorate a visually interesting staircase. Here, intriguing patterns and textures—all in neutral colors—add up to a satisfying space that's not wanting for more. A ladder is a cute and quirky addition to any home that instantly builds charm. Be sure to include deep-enough risers at not too steep intervals so that climbing the ladder is as easy as any other staircase.

Use Your Favorite Wood

Designer Kelly Hoppen mimicked the gentle curve of this open staircase with a modern pendant light hanging above the two-story foyer. The modern black railing and light wood steps are mirrored along the second-floor balcony and in the home's exposed beams. Opening the central staircase in this townhouse allowed Sarah Jefferys Architecture + Interiors to add light throughout the open rooms. Glass, white, and natural wood materials don't compete with the bright colors and rich textures in the living spaces. Metal commercial stairs are designed to be installed with minimal disruption to your routine. The stairs are delivered to your door with everything you need to safely and securely set them up, and intuitive instructions to make sure the job is done right.

Let the Light In

The mesh, often crafted from durable steel or iron, offers both safety and a visually intriguing pattern. It plays with light and shadow, creating ever-changing visuals as one moves. Elevate your staircase experience with the poised elegance of a stairway pendant lamp.

Spiral Staircase Design

This stunning spiral staircase by John Maniscalco Architecture features wood treads and a metal railing system, creating a beautiful contrast between natural and industrial materials. The open design allows light to flow through the space, highlighting the beautiful architecture. This staircase by Wools of New Zealand has a traditional look with wood treads and white painted risers, but the addition of a boldly patterned carpet adds a playful touch. This stunning staircase by Designer Floors Inc. features wood treads and white painted risers, with a unique design that incorporates a bookshelf under the stairs. The use of wood for the bookshelf and railing creates a cohesive look throughout the space.

The most magnificent stairways often look more like works of art, such as this serpentine piece that coils as it rises. Building these stairs combined the skills of various artisans who work with wood, metal, and drywall. This shapely staircase gently widens as it meets the grand foyer, creating a smooth transition between levels. Decorative molding applied to the walls throughout the foyer blends well with the dramatic look of the staircase. Spiral staircases are not only gorgeous, but they’re a clever solution if you’re remodeling a narrow space like this one.

This unique staircase design by Prestige Railings & Stairs Ltd. incorporates a custom-made metal railing with an organic, flowing shape that adds a touch of artistry to the space. This staircase by Dynamic Property Services, Inc. features a floating design with glass panels and wood treads, creating a modern and elegant look. The use of lighting under each step adds an extra layer of interest and safety. You can modernize an existing staircase with a new paint job, a colorful stair runner, or a new handrail. If remodeling or designing a staircase feels overwhelming, look to this timeless design, which features mid-tone wood treads and railings and white paint everywhere else.

This approach won't produce the staircase's grand and sophisticated signature look. The downside of these stairs is that they are the most challenging to design and build, making them an expensive design choice. This farmhouse-inspired entryway features dark wood steps framed by an eclectic gallery wall that leads to a loft space upstairs. Do us a favor and go take a look at your staircase head-on—what do you see?

For this L-shaped staircase, Studio Munroe adds a subtle geometric runner rug to bring texture to this bright entryway. Embrace raw authenticity with an industrial mesh railing flanking your staircase. Born from the gritty essence of factories and warehouses, this design brings rugged charm to contemporary spaces. This design marvel doesn’t just connect levels; it celebrates space and volume. The expansive verticality, often punctuated by tall windows or art pieces, transforms the act of climbing stairs into a grand affair.

There will be one less tread than risers since the top of the staircase will start with a riser below the upper floor landing. Nosings are required to overhang at least 3/4 of an inch, but not more than an 1-1/4 inches. Temporarily dry fit the first tread so that a pilot hole can be drilled through the back of the riser and into the tread. Dive into architectural elegance with the board and batten molding gracing your staircase.

Paired with wooden steps or exposed brick walls, the mesh railing provides a tactile contrast, blending the rough with the refined. It’s more than just a protective barrier; it’s a nod to industrial heritage, repurposed for modern living. The matte finish or wrought intricacies of the metal can evoke industrial chic or modern artistry, depending on the design. Acting as the spine of the staircase, the black railing stands out against lighter backgrounds, anchoring the space with its undeniable presence. The sheer transparency of the glass creates an illusion of a wider, airier space, making it a favorite for those aiming for a minimalist, light-filled interior. But beyond aesthetics, the glass railing offers a tangible sense of security, wrapping the staircase in a delicate embrace.

A unique design by Douglas Design Studio for a small space, this staircase features a combination of wood treads and metal risers, creating a modern industrial look. The open riser design also helps to maximize natural light throughout the space. So, as you focus on the functional parts, do not forget the décor and aesthetics. We have a few stairway design ideas to make your boring stairway come to life.

Paired with ornate balusters or a sweeping handrail, the curved staircase becomes a testament to the artistry of carpentry and design. It’s more than just a pathway between levels; it’s a dance of form and function, gracefully leading the way with every turn. The understated elegance of the cables, combined with their industrial charm, creates a harmonious blend of form and function. Whether you’re scaling heights indoors or navigating outdoor steps, the cable railing ensures a secure grip, all while turning your staircase into a modern-day design voyage.

The southern corridor is more private in nature where the den, three bedrooms and two bathrooms reside. Also on the south side of the home, one of the exits leads to an outdoor infinity pool that is solar-heated. "The river forms a natural division for public and private spaces in the residence, marking the point where one circulation transitions into another," the architect said. "The bridge aspect allows for less land to be disturbed, which means less impact on its immediate physical environment," the architect said in a project description. By building over the water, Brunn was able to create a spacious home that treads more lightly on the earth.

After four years of careful collaboration, the boundary-pushing Bridge House gets its big reveal in Hancock Park. An ultra-unique site with a stream running through it was the impetus for Bridge House’s unlikely conception – the innovative design extends more than 200 horizontal feet across the site, passing over the stream in the process. After breaking ground and barreling through transformative construction milestones, together with MODAA Construction, Dan Brunn Architecture and Dwell are thrilled to reveal Bridge House’s final form. A pivotal element of conception and construction of this home is its length, which allows for more Northern exposure, and since the space is only 20 feet wide, there is more natural light and less electric energy consumed. This Northern exposure aids in keeping the ecological footprint down, as there is no direct heat gain, and less need for artificial cooling, contributing to the net-zero goal.

Thought was given not only to how the home is presented now, but how it will react and evolve symbiotically with nature over time. "Just as the landscape will change," says Brunn, "the house will behave the same way." From afar, the exacting application of the cedar makes the home’s exterior appear uniform and monolithic. Once viewed up close, the texture and depth of the natural wood is illuminated.

Dan Brunn, FAIA, Principal of Dan Brunn Architecture is designing a one-of-a kind “bridge house,” that will, literally, bridge over a stream. The 4,500-square-foot home will serve as a demonstration of innovative systems and forward-thinking processes. The design exemplifies Brunn’s signature minimalist aesthetic evident in dynamic spatial choreography of light and volume. On the outside, a solar panel system was installed on the roof and the placement of the windows face north, which allows less heat gain in the home while still letting in a lot of light. The windows themselves are made of special aluminum and dual-pane low-E glass.

A unique home in Los Angeles County that captured the interest of California homebuyers and started a wider conversation about the high cost of getting into the real estate market has found a new owner. With a minimalist aesthetic and dynamic interplay of light and volume, Bridge House serves as a testament to forward-thinking design in the world of residential architecture. A visual connection to the outdoors is maintained, while the corrugated Cor-Ten fence is seen in distant view. The courtyard, a dramatic indoor-outdoor experience, becomes an extension of the home’s public space. Visual and functional connection to the dining room is enabled by Series 600 Multi-Slide Doors from Western Window Systems. Taking advantage of the temperate California climate, Bridge House embraces indoor-outdoor living to the fullest.

When completed, Bridge House will stretch 210 feet across the grounds, straddling a brook in an architectural maneuver that gives the project its name. When principal Dan Brunn purchased the property, his initial plan had been to renovate the existing home. The seeds of Bridge House were sown, however, when he visited the Breakers in Newport, Rhode Island.

Several outdoor living and entertaining zones have been incorporated, while the large glass sliders at the interior courtyard completely disappear to invite nature in. The landscape of the home is deeply intertwined with the surrounding natural environment. Lush and wild, this landscape preserves the existing trees and serves to retain as much of an organic feel as possible, incorporating a flourishing arrangement of grass and foliage. The stream may be crossed by entering the home, or via small wooden bridge, which was created from a repurposed tree. Right off of the outdoor living area, just as you pass to the private sector, sits a den, with wood wrapped walls, offering a warmer and more intimate setting in comparison to the other rooms. Rooms are fitted with large windows that bring in light and provide a connection to the outdoor landscape.

Approaching from the public side, you experience rays of light and warmth, overlooking a lush landscape. Once on the private side, you are shielded from the neighboring home’s views. Brunn, who studied architecture at Harvard's Graduate School of Design, founded his studio in 2005. His projects include the renovation of a 1970s house designed by architect Frank Gehry, the design of a flagship store for clothing brand Road to Awe, and the creation of a Las Vegas boutique with illuminated glass shelves. The nonprofit serves people experiencing homelessness, largely through its mainstay called Ready to Work, a yearlong program with paid work, housing and case management support. Since it went to market only a few weeks ago, there has been no shortage of interested parties looking to give the treehouse new life.

Brunn’s signature minimalist aesthetic is on full display, characterized by dynamic interplays of light and volume. A visionary architectural exploration born in the heart of Hancock Park, Bridge House LA has officially reached completion after 2 years of construction. Designed by Dan Brunn, AIA, Principal of Dan Brunn Architecture, the one-of-a kind “bridge house” will literally bridge 65’ over a natural stream. Bridge House is an architectural marvel nestled in the heart of Hancock Park, Los Angeles, California. This modern single-family residence, designed by Dan Brunn Architecture in 2020, seamlessly connects with nature while showcasing eco-friendly design elements. Spanning 4,500 square feet (418 square meters), the house boasts a unique bridge-like structure over a serene, natural stream.

Bone Structure which was also implemented in the formation of the home, is a unique steel structural system that uses nearly 90% recycled material and produces minimal waste on a building site. Architect Dan Brunn designed his home directly over the Brook of the Gardens. The kitchen, which Dan believes is the heart of the home, opens out to the living room via a concealed egress. Modern wooden cabinetry, quartz countertops, and a substantial island compliment the expansive sliding glass window doors. Floor to ceiling windows invite in a flood of natural light and sun-lit beams. Much like the living area, the kitchen is designed to promote sleek and seamless entertaining, with a minimal footprint.

Though the Italian Renaissance-style mansion that was the Vanderbilt family’s summer retreat is a far cry from the modern profile of Bridge House, it sparked an idea for Brunn. The copper-hued Caldera Cor-Ten gas fire pit from Paloform helps define a cozy outdoor gathering space, while engaging in cohesive dialogue with the corrugated Cor-Ten fence. Both will gracefully age over time, developing a maintenance-free natural patina. A communal, semi-private outdoor gathering space, anchored by a Paloform Caldera Cor-Ten fire pit, provides a cozy hub for conversation. The outdoor feature was chosen because of its natural reactivity with the elements, developing a beautiful and maintenance-free patina over time. The idea, says Brunn, is to "let it go, let it rust," embracing the organic change and natural beauty.

Furthermore, Bridge House has natural ventilation, including a series of skylights to ventilate corridors. All window applications are outfitted with custom shades, to block out even more sun exposure and keep the interior cool. On the exterior of the home, a series of photovoltaic cells on the roof allow for efficient and low impact energy sourcing. The project uses unprecedented designs and systems, with an emphasis on economy and efficiency of design, accordingly the firm was eager to incorporate BONE Structure’s steel-construction modular system in Bridge House. Combining a classic post-and-beam structure with energy-efficient solutions, BONE Structure delivers a flexible, durable, and sustainable product, that affords expedited on-sight assembly.

A visionary architectural exploration born in the heart of Hancock Park, Bridge House LA (bridgehousela.com) has officially reached completion after 2 years of construction. Designed by Dan Brunn, AIA, Principal of Dan Brunn Architecture (danbrunn.com), the one-of-a kind “bridge house” will literally bridge 65’ over a natural stream. Staying consistent with Brunn’s “less is more” approach to building, the home will occupy 4,500 square feet on a 15,000 square-foot lot. The project’s commitment to sustainable solutions will serve as a demonstration of innovative systems and forward-thinking processes. The home’s design exemplifies Brunn’s signature minimalist aesthetic, evident in dynamic spatial choreography of light and volume.

Architect Dan Brunn has decided to use a long, slender layout for his own home design, developed in partnership with MODAA. The Bridge House LA is his new modern residence occupying 4,500 square feet in Los Angeles, California. It is placed on a plot where it stretches over a small stream, surrounded by lush landscapes. “The idea is to do something extraordinary with ordinary means”, says Brunn.

The 1-bedroom, 1-bathroom home in Alhambra has captured the attention of prospective buyers across the Los Angeles region and beyond. The realtor tasked with selling the property is hoping to strike the balance between affordable starter home and fixer-upper, but the property is truly unlike anything you’ve ever seen before. With Los Angeles and the surrounding communities experiencing some of the highest housing prices in the nation, many first-time buyers are looking for something affordable that won’t be a money-sink.

"We expected the light patterns to emanate from the fin windows," says Brunn. "We didn’t expect the reflection," he says, marveling at the serendipitous way the sliding doors bounce back light. The result of Dan’s inspiration, paired with his unique background and signature style, is a pointed approach to development and a brilliant use of space. Once inside the home, it is clear that square footage and physical measurements do not describe the emotion that Bridge House evokes, and this is exactly how Dan intended for it to be.

Named a “Rising Star” by Architectural Digest, Dan’s portfolio includes furniture design that addresses the needs of living room, bedroom, and bath with highly functional, sophisticated, and streamlined solutions. His first home project, Flip Flop, has appeared in more that 135 websites and publications internationally. He earned a B.Arch at University of Southern California, and a M.Arch from Harvard University’s Graduate School of Design. Treating the home as a portal through which to experience nature, windows and doors from Western Window Systems played a vital role in establishing the intimate relationship with the environment. The first of its kind, a completely custom Series 980 Double Pivot Door impressively spans a 20 foot horizontal opening, dramatically welcoming guests into the home. Deeper inside the home, interplay between light, shadow, and reflection creates quiet moments of ethereal beauty.

The natural cedar cladding received a water-based penetrative stain that creates a bleached look. The maintenance-free effect will trend towards grey over time, gradually assimilating to its environment. In the home’s den, a pair of fixed and casement windows create the perfect vertical frame for the towering tree trunk beyond. The warm and inviting kitchen occupies the space between the living and dining rooms, maintaining an open and fluid connection to both. Spanning an impressive 210 feet, Bridge House crosses directly over a brook running through the property, marrying the landscape with minimal disturbance.

Doors and windows at the home’s bridge filter and reflect light, with the overlapping patterns creating a dazzling display of ethereal beauty. Traversing the stream directly rather than confining the design to one side, the home’s siting laid the framework for an immersive experience with nature – a central objective of the project. "The idea with the design was to un-design in a way," says principal Dan Brunn.

Getting into the housing market in Southern California can be both daunting and confusing. If sticker shock doesn’t scare you off, finding a property that fits your lifestyle can be even hard to come by. The Midnight Mission opened its Women’s Crisis and Bridge Housing Program in response to the growing homelessness crisis.

People in the Ready to Work program either work in the kitchen under Chef John Trejo or on the outdoor crew, providing supplemental sanitation and landscaping to municipal and commercial customers. It’s near plenty of businesses, located within the desirable Alhambra school district and existing zoning rules would allow for the property to be used as either a full-time residence or even a commercial enterprise. It just might be the most affordable “waterfront” property in Los Angeles County, if you’re willing to put up with the home’s… eccentricities.

Symbols and Motifs in Navajo Weaving Nizhoni Ranch Gallery

navajo design

Often considered the highpoint of Navajo weaving artistry, this exhibition will take an in depth look at these masterpieces of design created over a 30 year period from 1840 to 1870. I think the weaving is beautiful but, like many other beautiful things, I am not sure that it would work with anything else in my life. I’m very impressed by the skill involved and appreciate it more for knowing a bit of the history and context behind it. Genuine Navajo rugs are meticulously handmade using traditional techniques that have been passed down through many generations. Each rug can take weeks or even months to make, factoring the length of time that’s required to sheer the sheep, spin the wool, dye the wool, and perform the weaving process.

Cultural influences

Spirit lines in weaving are small strands of contrasting colors that flow from the inner design element to the outer edge. Throughout the history of the world, lightning was the most powerful symbol of the Navajo. In the ancient Aztec world, lightning was used to create weaving tools, but it could also have helped define the power of a blanket or rug.

Another common way people (i.e. the Santo Domingo Pueblo tribe) from this region decorated pots was through painting on the design. Potters would use the negative space to draw out decorations on a yellow-ish or white background. He then painted etched the pattern (it’s very similar to the Greek’s black-figure pottery).

Coiled Pine Pitch Carved Pottery

Many things like hairstyles, a type of clothing, etc…are not and cannot be owned by anyone from any culture. Also, if you do believe in cultural appropriation then please stop wearing jeans and stealing from the white man who invented them among many other things! Almost all cultural appropriation arguments act as if there was something a culture owned that could have been stolen like corned rows (I.e. hair) or a kimono (I.e. a style of clothing). Unfortunately, NO ONE owns those things and even if they do, as in the case of jeans, the patents on them expired long ago as was the case with Levi Strauss.

In more recent times it is these figures that have been pulled across onto bags or cushion covers. The Hopi and the Zuni, both neighbouring tribes to the Navajo in the US southwest, also weave. Indeed it's likely the Hopi originally taught the craft to the Navajo.

Through careful planning and innovative technologies, net-zero energy homes are not only environmentally friendly but also economically beneficial, offering homeowners long-term savings on utility bills. Passive houses accomplish all this with green strategies, including super insulation, airtight construction and high-performance windows. Passive house design strategies can be used in any climate and in both new and existing buildings, including hospitals, schools and high-rises.

The hair is laid across the pottery pieces in different designs and patterns at the bisque stage of clay. Then the piece is fired using a technique that is similar to raku firing. The bright color and intricate designs demonstrated in the pictured piece have become synonymous with Navajo pottery. The artist hand etches a design into the surface and the pot is fired. Perhaps two of the earliest design elements to be utilized by Navajo weavers are the diamond and the triangle.

Native American blankets, and later Native American Navajo rugs, have depicted beautiful art and historical/cultural/religious significance, and have always been an important part of the culture. The Navajo have traditionally woven the finest Navajo blankets and rugs and one doesn’t think of the Native American Indian art of Arizona without the image of the Navajo woven/Southwestern rug coming to mind. Stories of traders’ involvement with Navajo communities often run eerily close to what could be called exploitation. Many of these stories appear romantic if not for the power imbalances at play.

This studio course provides an opportunity for the Notre Dame students to research and develop design work with real-world applications, while also learning about and incorporating elements of the Navajo culture, he sees. St. Michael has already begun utilizing the students’ planning and building design work to advance its capital campaign for new facilities in the coming years. More broadly, Etsitty hopes the class will influence a new crop of architects in how they incorporate historical and culture considerations in their work. Someday, he says, one of them may be designing new facilities on the Navajo reservation, or other Native American lands around the country. Deswood Etsitty ’93 comes from a family of builders on the Navajo Nation in Arizona.

It seems impossible, but that is precisely the claim of a passive house. At a time when environmental consciousness is becoming ever more vitally important, the housing industry is making itself at home in the middle of this profound transformation. You can find classic works like “Girl With a Pearl Earring” and “American Gothic” reimagined through a Native American lens.

The bayeta, occasionally used in first-phase blankets, became a color and cloth that Navajo weavers used prominently in the second phase. The bayeta was dyed with cochineal, named after the cochineal beetle. "It came in rich shades from rose to deep burgundy and it's permanent," Campbell says. "There's no plant in the Southwest that will give you such an intense red that won't fade." LightningA powerful elemental force symbolizing much among the Navajo people, lightning embodies strength and power for the weaver, the culture, and even the weaving itself.

This indigenous knowledge has been passed down from one generation to next generations for centuries. While Navajo artists have been creating eye catching textiles since the late 1600s, the middle of the 1800s saw an explosion of color and design elaboration. Using primarily a limited, but bold, color palette of red, white, and blue, artists created some of the most visually elaborate designs found at any time in their history.

A graduate of the Eastman School of Music and the University of Cincinnati’s College-Conservatory of Music, Chee’s solo piano music is inspired by traditional Navajo chants and songs. The homes provided by ZenniHome to the Navajo Nation will address the critical housing need and stimulate economic development. A 2011 Navajo Nation Housing Report found that 90% of all Navajo Nation housing was in need of replacement or major repairs. The nation needs as many as 34,100 new homes to meet demand, according to the Navajo Housing Authority assessment, which conducted the survey in 2009. However, this number is likely higher with the increase in tribal enrollment, the time that has passed since the survey and other factors such as the pandemic.

There's also a rich Hispanic tradition (Rio Grande blankets) and the Mexicans may in turn have taught the Hopi. I originally interviewed Peter for a different piece - about the design process at Ralph Lauren. But at the end we got to talking about his studies, and why he loved and collected Navajo weavings. These emblems are sacred to the Navajo people and were used in traditional ceremonies prior to World War II, known as “whirling logs,” “falling logs,” or “swallowing logs.” The swirling shape resembles a cross with shorter 90-degree-notches at the end of each line. The Navajo people suffered at Fort Sumner until General William Tecumseh Sherman arrived.

The Fall of the House of Usher Summary, Characters, Themes, & Facts

the fall of the house of usher

When a door, at length, closed upon her, my glance sought instinctively and eagerly the countenance of the brother—but he had buried his face in his hands, and I could only perceive that a far more than ordinary wanness had overspread the emaciated fingers through which trickled many passionate tears. It was, he said, a constitutional and a family evil, and one for which he despaired to find a remedy—a mere nervous affection, he immediately added, which would undoubtedly soon pass off. I have said that the sole effect of my somewhat childish experiment—that of looking down within the tarn—had been to deepen the first singular impression.

“Mad Trist” spookily crosses literary borders, as though Roderick’s obsession with these poems ushers their narratives into his own domain and brings them to life. The tale highlights the Gothic feature of the doppelganger, or character double, and portrays doubling in inanimate structures and literary forms. The narrator, for example, first witnesses the mansion as a reflection in the tarn, or shallow pool, that abuts the front of the house.

More Must-Reads From TIME

One of the phantasmagoric conceptions of my friend, partaking not so rigidly of the spirit of abstraction, may be shadowed forth, although feebly, in words. A small picture presented the interior of an immensely long and rectangular vault or tunnel, with low walls, smooth, white, and without interruption or device. Certain accessory points of the design served well to convey the idea that this excavation lay at an exceeding depth below the surface of the earth. No outlet was observed in any portion of its vast extent, and no torch, or other artificial source of light was discernible; yet a flood of intense rays rolled throughout, and bathed the whole in a ghastly and inappropriate splendor. BY THE TIME you reach the final episode of The Fall of the House of Usher, the latest of Netflix's horror limited series from writer/director Mike Flanagan, there have been a lot of scares, a lot of violence, and a lot of lore.

Because of the structure of the house, the characters cannot act or move freely in the house. Thus the house is assumed to be a monstrous character/structure in itself. It is a mastermind that controls the actions and fate of its residents.

The secret that is buried and then comes to light (represented by Madeline) is never revealed. The symbol which represents the secret – Madeline herself – is hidden away by Roderick, but that symbol returns, coming to light at the end of the story and (in good Gothic fashion) destroying the family for good. In a shocking development, Madeline breaks out of her coffin and enters the room, and Roderick confesses that he buried her alive. Madeline attacks her brother and kills both him and herself in the struggle, and the narrator flees the house. It is a stormy night, and as he leaves he sees the house fall down, collapsing into the lake which reflects the house’s image. Several days later, Roderick tells the narrator that Madeline has died, and they lay her to rest in a vault.

After Roderick Usher claims that Madeline has died, the narrator helps Usher entomb Madeline in an underground vault despite noticing Madeline's flushed, lifelike appearance. As if in the superhuman energy of his utterance there had been found the potency of a spell — the huge antique pannels to which the speaker pointed, threw slowly back, upon the instant, their ponderous and ebony jaws. It was the work of the rushing gust — but then without those doors there did stand the lofty and enshrouded figure of the lady Madeline of Usher. There was blood upon her white robes, and the evidence of some bitter struggle upon every portion of her emaciated frame. For a moment she remained trembling and reeling to and fro upon the threshold — then, with a low moaning cry, fell heavily inward upon the person of her brother, and in her violent and now final death-agonies, bore him to the floor a corpse, and a victim to the terrors he had anticipated. In the manner of my friend I was at once struck with an incoherence — an inconsistency; and I soon found this to arise from a series of feeble and futile struggles to overcome an habitual trepidancy — an excessive nervous agitation.

“…an influence, whose supposititious force was conveyed in terms too shadowy here to be re-stated. The narrator, while entering the House of Usher, sees a small crack in the house, this crack not only refers to the crack in the house, but also the crack in the Usher family. There is a symbolic connection between the literal fissure and the metaphorical fissure. This small fissure shows disruption in the family, specifically between Roderick and Usher. Besides art mirroring or foreshadowing reality in the story, the other thing such as “reflection” and “doubling” is also going on in the story. When the story opens, we see that the narrator observes the inverted image of the house of Usher in the water pool that lies in front of the house.

Storyline

I know not how it was — but, with the first glimpse of the building, a sense of insufferable gloom pervaded my spirit. I say insufferable; for the feeling was unrelieved by any of that half-pleasurable, because poetic, sentiment, with which the mind usually receives even the sternest natural images of the desolate or terrible. There was an iciness, a sinking, a sickening of the heart — an unredeemed dreariness of thought which no goading of the imagination could torture into aught of the sublime. What was it — I paused to think — what was it that so unnerved me in the contemplation of the House of Usher? It was a mystery all insoluble; nor could I grapple with the shadowy fancies that crowded upon me as I pondered. I was forced to fall back upon the unsatisfactory conclusion, that while, beyond doubt, there are combinations of very simple natural objects which have the power of thus affecting us, still the analysis of this power lies among considerations beyond our depth.

Because of Madeline’s similarity to Roderick, she has been buried before she is actually dead, and this similarity is shown by the coffin that holds her identity. The short story opens with an unnamed narrator who approaches House of Usher on the dark, dull, and soundless day. The narrator noticed the diseased atmosphere and absorbed evil in the house from the murky pond and decaying trees around the house. He also observes that even though the house appears to be decaying, its structure is fairly solid. In front of the building, there is no small crack from the roof to the ground.

In the story “The Fall of the House of Usher,” strangely mingles the real with the fictional. The artistic creation of Roderick is directly connected to what happens in the house of Usher. He creates an underground tomb and then entombed Madeline in the tomb. He then prophecies about the destruction of the house, and the house is destroyed.

The sources indicate that the owner of the house caught a sailor and his young wife in the house and entombed them in their place of trysting. In 1830, when the house was torn down, two bodies were found in the cellar cavity. The Martian Chronicles, a 1950 collection of stories by Ray Bradbury, contains a novella called "Usher II," a homage to Poe.

Poe condenses these into a short story and plays around with them, locating new psychological depths within these features. In November 2023, Roderick Usher, the CEO of pharmaceutical company Fortunato Pharmaceuticals, loses all six of his children within two weeks. Auguste Dupin, an Assistant United States Attorney who dedicated his career to exposing Fortunato's corruption, to his childhood home, where he tells the true story of his family and unveils the Ushers' darkest secrets.

Roderick contacted him when he was suffering from emotional and mental distress. He does not know much about the house of Usher and is the first outsider to visit the house in many years. The narrator tells him that such gas is natural; there is nothing uncommon in it. The narrator has visited the house because Roderick Usher has sent him a letter that sincerely asks him to give him company. In the letter, Roderick has mentioned that he has been physically and emotionally ill due to which the narrator has rushed to help his friend. Hezekiah Usher House could provide a source of inspiration for Poe’s story.

To cheer up his friend, the narrator spends several days with him. He also reads stories to him; however, he is able to lift the spirit of Roderick. When Poe began writing short stories, the short story was not generally regarded as serious literature. Poe’s writing helped elevate the genre from a position of critical neglect to an art form.

Roderick and Madeline are the only remaining members of the Usher family. Our books — the books which, for years, had formed no small portion of the mental existence of the invalid — were, as might be supposed, in strict keeping with this character of phantasm. One favorite volume was a small octavo edition of the Directorium Inquisitorium , by the Dominican Eymeric de Gironne; and there were passages in Pomponius Mela, about the old African Satyrs and œgipans, over which Usher would sit dreaming for hours. His chief delight, however, was found in the perusal of an exceedingly rare and curious book in quarto Gothic — the manual of a forgotten church — the Vigiliae Mortuorum secundum Chorum Ecclesiae Maguntinae. But evil things, in robes of sorrow,Assailed the monarch’s high estate;(Ah, let us mourn, for never morrowShall dawn upon him, desolate!)And, round about his home, the gloryThat blushed and bloomedIs but a dim-remembered storyOf the old time entombed.

He believes the mansion is sentient and responsible, in part, for his deteriorating mental health and melancholy. Despite this admission, Usher remains in the mansion and composes art containing the Usher mansion or similar haunted mansions. His mental health deteriorates faster as he begins to hear Madeline's attempts to escape the underground vault she was buried in, and he eventually meets his death out of fear in a manner similar to the House of Usher's cracking and sinking. Roderick and Madeline are twins and the two share an incommunicable connection that critics conclude may be either incestuous or metaphysical,[7] as two individuals in an extra-sensory relationship embodying a single entity. To that end, Roderick's deteriorating condition speeds his own torment and eventual death.

The bond between the brother and sister is inexplicable and intense. One can interpret that twin siblings are actually one person that is split into two. He illustrates himself as a mind to her body and suffers from the mental counterpart of his sister’s physical illness. The narrator also mentions that Roderick appears to be afraid of his own house. Madeline, the sister of Roderick, is taken with a mysterious illness that cannot be cured by the doctors. She is perhaps suffering from catalepsy in which one loses the control of his/her limbs.

It’s “Succession” meets The Tell-Tale Heart, a story of vengeance, power, betrayal, and bloody parts. As Roderick nears the conclusion of his story, which jumps back and forth between his early years working at Fortunato and the events that led up to each of his children's deaths, he finally arrives at the fateful night that changed everything, New Year's Eve of 1979. An unnamed narrator approaches the house of Usher on a “dull, dark, and soundless day.” This house—the estate of his boyhood friend, Roderick Usher—is gloomy and mysterious.

Episodes

The final episode finally reveals what Roderick and Madeline did—and were running from—all those years ago, and how they first got involved with Verna in the first place. Who entereth herein, a conqueror hath bin;     Who slayeth the dragon, the shield he shall win. As the series draws to a close, Verna—whose name is an anagram of the titular bird in Poe's classic 1845 poem "The Raven"—is shown placing an item on each of the Usher's graves that represents their respective downfalls, closing the loop of her karmic retribution. Roderick then invited Madeline over to their childhood home, where he poisoned her drink and set to work mummifying her.

More Must-Reads From TIME

It was, especially, upon retiring to bed late in the night of the seventh or eighth day after the placing of the lady Madeline within the don-jon, that I experienced the full power of such feelings. Sleep came not near my couch—while the hours waned and waned away. I endeavoured to believe that much, if not all of what I felt, was due to the bewildering influence of the gloomy furniture of the room—of the dark and tattered draperies, which, tortured into motion by the breath of a rising tempest, swayed fitfully to and fro upon the walls, and rustled uneasily about the decorations of the bed. An irrepressible tremour gradually pervaded my frame; and, at length, there sat upon my very heart an incubus of utterly causeless alarm. Shaking this off with a gasp and a struggle, I uplifted myself upon the pillows, and, peering earnestly within the intense darkness of the chamber, hearkened—I know not why, except that an instinctive spirit prompted me—to certain low and indefinite sounds which came, through the pauses of the storm, at long intervals, I knew not whence. Overpowered by an intense sentiment of horror, unaccountable yet unendurable, I threw on my clothes with haste (for I felt that I should sleep no more during the night), and endeavoured to arouse myself from the pitiable condition into which I had fallen, by pacing rapidly to and fro through the apartment.

Poe was often dismissed by contemporary literary critics because of the unusual content and brevity of his stories. When his work was critically evaluated, it was condemned for its tendencies toward Romanticism. The writers and critics of Poe’s day rejected many of that movement’s core tenets, including its emphasis on the emotions and the experience of the sublime. Poe’s contemporaries favoured a more realistic approach to writing.

It turns out that almost every branch of the Usher family tree has been cut by violent horror. ” “No, not before,” he replies in one of the show’s many glimpses of Flanagan’s viciously dark sense of humor. (Poe had one too.) Roderick has been haunted by all his awful children who have shuffled off this mortal coil, and it’s because it feels like the ghosts are finally coming for him that he is ready to confess. He’s having visions of monstrous ghosts, including the recurring specter of Verna (Carla Gugino), a figure that connects most of these tall tales as a sort of vengeful force of karma, the devil come to take what she’s due from a man who profited off the pain of others.

thought on “A Summary and Analysis of Edgar Allan Poe’s ‘The Fall of the House of Usher’”

There can be no doubt that the consciousness of the rapid increase of my superstition—for why should I not so term it? And it might have been for this reason only, that, when I again uplifted my eyes to the house itself, from its image in the pool, there grew in my mind a strange fancy—a fancy so ridiculous, indeed, that I but mention it to show the vivid force of the sensations which oppressed me. A letter, however, had lately reached me in a distant part of the country—a letter from him—which, in its wildly importunate nature, had admitted of no other than a personal reply. The writer spoke of acute bodily illness—of a mental disorder which oppressed him—and of an earnest desire to see me, as his best, and indeed his only personal friend, with a view of attempting, by the cheerfulness of my society, some alleviation of his malady. It was the manner in which all this, and much more, was said—it was the apparent heart that went with his request—which allowed me no room for hesitation; and I accordingly obeyed forthwith what I still considered a very singular summons.

Family

Moreover, there is also an inverted dichotomy between Roderick Usher and Madeline Usher. The tone of the story “The Fall of the House of Usher” is deliberate. The narrator of the story is the center of the strange parts of the story. However, an important point should be kept in mind that the story is narrated in retrospect; that is why the deliberate tone of the story is not compromised by the frantic mania of a terrified narrator. The Fall of the House of Usher, supernatural horror story by Edgar Allan Poe, published in Burton’s Gentleman’s Magazine in 1839 and issued in Poe’s Tales of the Grotesque and Arabesque (1840). A television adaptation was produced by ATV for the ITV network in 1966 for the horror anthology series Mystery and Imagination.

What deal did Verna make with Roderick and Madeline, and why did it result in the entire Usher family dying?

Our glances, however, rested not long upon the dead — for we could not regard her unawed. The disease which had thus entombed the lady in the maturity of youth, had left, as usual in all maladies of a strictly cataleptical character, the mockery of a faint blush upon the bosom and the face, and that suspiciously lingering smile upon the lip which is so terrible in death. We replaced and screwed down the lid, and, having secured the door of iron, made our way, with toil, into the scarcely less gloomy apartments of the upper portion of the house. Our glances, however, rested not long upon the dead—for we could not regard her unawed.

The bedroom door is then blown open to reveal Madeline, bloodied from her arduous escape from the tomb. In a final fit of rage, she attacks her brother, scaring him to death as she herself expires. The narrator then runs from the house, and, as he does, he notices a flash of moonlight behind him. He turns back in time to see the Moon shining through the suddenly widened crack in the house. As he watches, the House of Usher splits in two and the fragments sink away into the lake. The windows were long, narrow, and pointed, and at so vast a distance from the black oaken floor as to be altogether inaccessible from within.

The family has no enduring branches, so all genetic transmission has occurred incestuously within the domain of the house. The peasantry confuses the mansion with the family because the physical structure has effectively dictated the genetic patterns of the family. The narrator finds the inside of the house just as spooky as the outside. He makes his way through the long passages to the room where Roderick is waiting. He notes that Roderick is paler and less energetic than he once was.

The House of Usher is a 2006 American drama thriller film based on the 1839 Edgar Allan Poe short story "The Fall of the House of Usher". The film was directed by Hayley Cloake and written by Collin Chang. While Roderick clearly felt lots of remorse for the collateral damage that his successes had caused through the years—Verna explicitly showed him the deaths he was responsible for—Madeline felt absolutely none. She instead blamed "the consumers," the people whose lives are made worse by taking in the products that they (and others) make available.

In a direct reference to Poe's most famous work (and how did we not see this coming with the name "LENORE"?!), A.I. Lenore only kept texting Roderick variations of, you guessed it, "Nevermore." “There is a lot about my job that I love, but there are moments like these that bring me no joy,” Verna tells her in her bedroom after a conversation that found Lenore telling Roderick that it wasn't too late to use Fortunato and the family's largesse for good. Keep in mind that Lenore still had this pureness of mind after seeing her mother burnt within in inch of her life by acid (thanks to Prospero's foolish orgy party) and then tortured by her father, who himself had just been brutally killed in a ridiculous freak accident.

Again, lighting plays a major role in this concept’s design, as wild-looking LED strips are all over both the front and rear of the SUV. The first thing to consider is what device you want to design cars on, as car design tools are only compatible with certain operating systems. The majority are available on Windows, but Mac and Linux users have a slightly more limited choice of options, with Rhino 3D being one of few car design programs available on Mac. Then there’s CAM (computer-aided manufacturing) CAE (computer-aided engineering), such as Autodesk Alias, Solidworks, and CATIA. These are built for creating manufacturable, industrial-grade car designs.

Cars are not only important transportation technology, but they’re also reflections of beautiful design work. If you love the way cars look and operate, automotive design may be something you’d be interested in! However, it may seem impossible if you don’t know the first thing about design or cars. Fortunately, whether you’re making drawings by hand or on a computer, almost anyone can easily learn how to design a car.

The lighting stands out as a big element of its rather rounded-off design. It has a glass roof, intriguing wheel styling and flush door handles to enhance its aerodynamics. The future of car design is exciting, with trends pointing towards increased personalization, further advancements in EVs, and the integration of artificial intelligence and augmented reality technologies. These developments promise to make future vehicles more efficient, safer, and more connected than ever before. Sustainability is becoming increasingly important in car design.

2D programs like Illustrator are the simplest, and if you’re looking to model in 3D then the likes of Fusion 360 are more beginner-friendly than programs like CATIA or Rhino 3D. This is also the case if you’re looking for mobile apps for designing cars, as only a few programs, like Adobe Illustrator, offer high-quality apps suitable for designing cars on smartphones and tablets. One of the biggest car manufacturers that uses Alias in the design process is Aston Martin. This case study explains how Alias allowed the Aston Martin team to consolidate on one standardized, collaborative tool for all its surface creation modeling, therefore streamlining the design process. Fusion 360 is one of the best automotive design tools, and it’s suitable for students (for free), hobbyists (free with limitations), and professionals.

While perhaps not the most groundbreaking car design of the year, this celebrity-brand collaboration was one of the most popular vehicle-related stories on Dezeen in 2023. Catia, Solidworks, Fusion 360, Autodesk Alias, and Blender are all popular car body design software. This is a very powerful car design 3D software covers design, CAM, simulation, cost estimates, manufacturability checks, and more. In addition to NURBs, Rhino 3D supports point clouds, polygon meshes, and subdivision geometry. The latest version of the software, Rhino 7, allows you to create organic shapes with a range of SubD tools. Fusion 360 is great for collaboration as it’s cloud-based, and it has instant data-management tools that help bring teams together and streamline workflows.

Finally, as Blender is open source, it also means that coders can customize the program and add new features, which is something you don’t get with other automotive rendering software. The M10 Booker resembles a tank, with a conventional tank layout of an armored chassis, armored turret with main gun, and a tracked movement system. Despite the resemblance, the Army strenuously maintains that the M10 is not a tank, and refers to it as the Booker Combat Vehicle, or BCV.

Designers sketch their ideas, gradually refining them into detailed drawings. With advancements in technology, digital rendering has become a vital part of this process. Finally, one of the greats of the modern era, surely, is Frank Stephenson.

On a serious note, from a car design perspective, is there a more daunting task than filling the shoes of Marcello Gandini? For that alone he secures his position in our minds at least, as one of the greats. These days, he’s overseeing design on Hyundai and Genesis models, very well we might add. Mazher U landed a professional design role at Monarch, a CA based startup developing electric and autonomous vehicles for sustainable agriculture. With the final curtain drawing on the age of combustion (to borrow a phrase from a friend and colleague Stephen Bailey), makers are wrestling to define their place in the new epoch. This is a pivotal moment for heritage marques to prove their relevance, show they are progressive and not stuck in the past.
